Recent reports state that Britain's road tunnels score poorly in safety tests and in particular that London's Blackwall tunnels are rated as `very poor', at only 28th and 29th in Europe. (AA Magazine, Spring/Summer 2002). In view of the horrific fires in the Mont Blanc and St Gotthard tunnels, what steps have been taken by TfL to ensure that urgent improvements are made to prevent a similar disaster in London? .
