  • Transport Safer Neighbourhood Teams (2) (Supplementary) [7]

    • Question by: Graham Tope
    • Meeting date: 08 November 2006
I take the point, wholly, that the train operating companies should be paying for their policing. Historically they do not. I do not think the public is going to be much impressed by this turf war.

Thank you, Chair. I think you have put your finger on it when you say partly a problem of transition. My experience has been that the public and the elected representatives of the public are not yet quite clear how the new system should be working, and there is perhaps some hanging on to old consultative contact structures that could really be burned back in order to save police time, because there is some concern about use of police time in the evenings if everybody was clear about how they could access the new consultative and dialogue framework. I wholly agree that this is best served to get sorted out pragmatically and at borough level, but can I suggest that it might be helpful, if it is not already happening, for the MPA to take the lead in discussion with what used to be the ALG, London Councils, as I think it is now, to try and start some thinking about how to rationalise what is becoming an increasingly complex consultative structure with often the same people going to lots of meetings saying exactly the same thing.

A number of local councillors and community activists have expressed their concerns about the complexity of police panels and committees. Please could you set out clearly the roles, responsibilities, membership and inter-relationship of a) the Safer Neighbourhood Ward Panels, b) Action (formerly TAZ) committees and c) the Police Community Consultative Groups?

    • Question by: Valerie Shawcross
    • Meeting date: 15 June 2005
Are you aware of any discussions between TfL and train operating companies in South London about levels of policing of commuter rail routes and are the police involved in these discussions?
  • Park Rangers/Wardens contact database

    • Reference: 2005/0183-1
    • Question by: Valerie Shawcross
    • Meeting date: 15 June 2005
At present members of the public have very little information as to how to contact their park wardens. Instead of dialling 999 for police if there is concern over suspicious activities in parks would it not be more practicable to have a contact database with contact numbers for park wardens and park rangers at local police stations. Are there any plans to have an updated contact database of park wardens and rangers in local police stations?
  • Mobile Phones

    • Reference: 2005/0185-1
    • Question by: Valerie Shawcross

Have any drivers in London been prosecuted for driving while using hand held mobile phones - this unsafe practice seems to be everywhere.
  • Anti-Social Behaviour

    • Question by: Valerie Shawcross
    • Meeting date: 15 June 2005
Can the police tackle the playing of very loud music in cars? Residents living along major roads are tortured by intolerable loud music during the summer months? The law seems to refer specifically to domestic and industrial premises noise nuisance - and there appears to be neither the legal nor enforcement framework in place to tackle this extremely antisocial behaviour. Would you recommend the introduction of statutory regulation say through the proposed Road Safety Bill?
