    • Question by: Andrew Pelling
    • Meeting date: 07 December 2005
It will be very important ' will it not ' if there is a suggestion that the land should be transferred from the LDA to the ODA permanently, that we get the best value from the point of view of London taxpayers, particularly with all the controversy over the costs for the London taxpayer. Can I just ask one other question? The Minister yesterday in the House of Commons said that the LDA had done `a reasonable job in difficult circumstance' in terms of land acquisition. Do you think that was a less than enthusiastic endorsement about what the LDA...

I am staggered by the figure of 24, because I am aware that there are a hell of a lot more businesses than 24 in that area, so it sounds to me like you have an awful long way to go. The main point I want to say to you: I do not know whether you saw some of the local businessmen, who were congregated outside City Hall this morning in advance of this meeting. I think some of them are in the audience now. They are shaking their heads in disbelief at what they just heard from you. I...

    • Meeting date: 08 September 2005
Can I just ask, then, finally, could you keep me abreast ' or all of us abreast, through the Chair ' of all the contacts you have made, and what businesses you are currently in proper negotiation with, so that we can see for ourselves what progress you are making?

I have to say, the answers are a little bit slow, and we have limited time. Sally Hamwee (Chair): I hope that Mary (Reilly) understands the balance that I have to keep during this meeting, and Angie (Bray) and I have already exchanged some words during this, but please, do carry on. There are important things that ' perhaps I should explain to everybody, primarily those sitting behind me ' there are things that we need to get on the record. Carry on.

Can I just make a final point, and then I am going to hand over to Damian (Hockney). I have to say ' call me a cynic ' but a lot of people would say that you are driving these businesses as close to the deadline as you possibly can by not having meaningful conversations. One letter of contact is hardly what I would call being in negotiations. Of course, if the deadline gets reached, presumably, down comes the CPO on terms of your choice, rather than theirs. That would be a cynic's view.
