  • Question and Answer Session: London's Economic Recovery and Business (Supplementary) [1]

    • Question by: Neil Garratt
    • Meeting date: 03 March 2022
Neil Garratt AM: Good morning, Deputy Mayor. Thank you for joining us remotely this morning. You have spoken just now about London’s recovery from the pandemic, which is ongoing. The question was about the challenges facing London’s business community, and obviously one of them is the one that you have faced yourself in not being able to come in here this morning because of the strikes. The Mayor promised zero days in strikes if he were elected in 2016, and I believe he now has more [days of strike] than the previous mayors combined. Can you give us a sense...
  • Question and Answer Session: London's Economic Recovery and Business (Supplementary) [2]

    • Question by: Hina Bokhari
    • Meeting date: 03 March 2022
Hina Bokhari AM: All my questions will be for the Deputy Mayor for Business. London’s street markets, small businesses and high streets are a vital part of the fabric of London’s culture and economy. They showcase the diversity of our city and provide a place that we can all meet, integrate and do business. We must do all we can to support them and to help them thrive. Last month [February 2022], the Mayor announced a £10 million budget to attract more tourists - as you were mentioning before - back into the capital, which includes a domestic and international...

    • Question by: Zack Polanski
    • Meeting date: 03 March 2022
Zack Polanski AM: My question is also for the Deputy Mayor. Deputy Mayor, I am certain that like myself and so many people ‑ in fact, everyone in this room ‑ you have been horrified by the nightly images we have seen on the news and on social media of the invasion of Ukraine, and I hope you will join me in saying loud and clear that refugees are welcome here. That is purely for humanitarian reasons. What I would love you to speak on, though, is what benefits new arrivals can have to London, to lift up our economy.

  • Question and Answer Session: London's Economic Recovery and Business (Supplementary) [6]

    • Question by: Keith Prince
    • Meeting date: 03 March 2022
Keith Prince AM (Deputy Chairman): My question is to Rajesh Agrawal. Do you think that the Mayor was right to insist on an inflation‑busting pay rise for London Underground, and do you think that they have shown their gratitude in putting on these strikes?
  • Question and Answer Session: London's Economic Recovery and Business (Supplementary) [7]

    • Question by: Peter Fortune
    • Meeting date: 03 March 2022
Peter Fortune AM: My questions are for the Deputy Mayor. It is a shame you did not take the lift with my colleague, Assembly Member Hall. Three hours in the car with the pair of you would have been enjoyable for everybody. It does, in all seriousness, go to show the fact that sometimes, despite the very necessary improvements to try to help with air quality, people do need to drive, especially in some of the outer London boroughs. With the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), that has had a real impact on some small businesses, especially...
  • Question and Answer Session: London's Economic Recovery and Business (Supplementary) [8]

    • Question by: Lord Bailey of Paddington
    • Meeting date: 03 March 2022
Shaun Bailey AM: Good morning, Panel. My question is directed to the Deputy Mayor. Please excuse me because I am going to have to jump about slightly with my topics. Firstly, do you think it is right that Londoners bear the cost for developing road user charging? In your answer, you made it quite clear that we are going to have to be prepared to bear this cost, do you think it is right that Londoners and Londoners alone bear that cost?

    • Question by: Krupesh Hirani
    • Meeting date: 03 March 2022
Krupesh Hirani AM: My first question is to Richard. One of the important sectors in London’s economy is the construction sector. It is clear from supply shortages of construction materials since Brexit and also the pandemic, as well as increasing costs, that this will leave an impact on not just the Mayor’s, but also councils up and down the country’s ability to carry on delivering affordable housing in their areas. How important is building affordable housing to London’s economic recovery and London’s businesses?
