  • Food (Supplementary) [5]

    • Question by: Peter Hulme Cross
    • Meeting date: 10 October 2006
Can I put in a plea that whatever food is provided will be reasonably priced? I know that this is somewhat subjective and what some people might consider reasonable, others may not. However, clearly where people have a monopoly, there is a huge temptation to charge whatever they like. Another thing: can I put in a plea for water to be provided free of charge because at the Athens Games, if you went in, they actually confiscated your water bottle if you had one with you. I was horrified. I think that is really important that at least plain water...

And I was very sorry you did not manage to make it to the Green Party conference but I am sure we can welcome you to the next one
  • Food (Supplementary) [7]

    • Question by: Mike Tuffrey
    • Meeting date: 10 October 2006
I wasn't expecting you to have the targets now but that these guidelines would actually be quite specific in terms of not just the Games themselves but the legacy aspect.
  • Food (Supplementary) [8]

Right, so you will go through the whole business about reusable packaging, minimal packaging, recyclable packaging and then composting waste and all of those issues?
  • Paralympic Legacy (Supplementary) [1]

    • Question by: Dee Doocey
    • Meeting date: 10 October 2006
I know. That is the problem. However, it is not just about role models. It is not just about the Tanni Grey-Thompsons of this world. It is not just about the Mike Braces. It is about community sport because surely the legacy of the Paralympics must be that people with disabilities, and in particular young children with disabilities, should be able to look at the Olympics, become inspired and say `I could do that'. However, there is no point in thinking `I could do that' if there are then no sports facilities locally to enable them to do it.
  • Paralympic Legacy (Supplementary) [2]

    • Question by: Dee Doocey
    • Meeting date: 10 October 2006
I have absolutely no doubt that that is the case. I have never had any doubts that that is the case. My concern is turning that into action. I am very clear what the legacy of the Olympics is going to be. More jobs, more houses, more employment opportunities, up-skilling the work force, etc, etc. I am less clear what the legacy of the Paralympics is going to be and it seems to me that nobody is taking responsibility for fronting this and for making sure it happens. I will give you an example. The Liberal Democrat group on the...
  • Paralympic Funding (Supplementary) [1]

    • Question by: Dee Doocey
    • Meeting date: 10 October 2006
    - £90 million or 6 per cent for the Paralympics but obviously there is also a statement that says there has got to be a better funding stream to reduce the dependency on the whole city. I am quoting from memory. And I am just wondering, if you are not ring-fencing any of the sponsorship money, specifically for the Paralympics, how will that work? I am quite happy to pursue it outside this meeting but I would like to really understand how this budget for the Paralympics is going to work.
  • Paralympic Funding (Supplementary) [2]

    • Question by: Dee Doocey
    • Meeting date: 10 October 2006
I understand that but I am looking at your original budget in the bid document and it had £90 million - I am never sure if it is billions, millions or thousands
  • Paralympic Funding (Supplementary) [3]

    • Question by: Dee Doocey
    • Meeting date: 10 October 2006
Okay. I actually wanted specific figures but I am quite happy to send you a note and for you to give them to me.
  • Paralympic Funding (Supplementary) [4]

    • Question by: Dee Doocey
    • Meeting date: 10 October 2006
But order of magnitude, like 10 per cent on this, 50 per cent on that, but I will pursue that outside the meeting. Could I just ask you, when you get the sponsorship money, and I am very pleased to hear there is going to be sponsorship for the Olympics and the Paralympics because it is much more attractive, when you get it are you ring-fencing a proportion of it for the Paralympics?
