Am I right in saying that the target for the percentage of time spent on community fire safety at station level has risen from 6 per cent to 8 per cent? Looking at the actual performance last year, over a third of our stations exceeded 10 per cent and one of them, Sutton, according to the figures, spent 25 per cent of their time on community fire safety. Is not 8 per cent really too low as a target, therefore, and should we not be getting the average a lot higher?

If some can achieve above 20 per cent, can we not encourage the others too?

Indeed. That is showing up in the home safety checks which I think have risen from around 9,000 a couple of years ago to approximately 20,000 in the year that has just ended and the target for the current year is approximately 30,000. Even if you add all that up, that is 40,000-50,000 home safety checks. One or two per cent of Londoners have had a home safety check. Should we not be looking for a real huge step forward in this area?

I have to say that I am surprised to see this question here, and it can only have come here because the Chair of the Authority has chosen to brief her colleagues on this. This matter is being debated, I thought, through the Chair's Coordinating Group which is normally a confidential body while options are discussed. Will the Chair confirm that there is no dispute that there are clearly variable natures of work between night and day? The main thrust of the question is about the Government recognising the unique need to protect its capital city from terrorist and major incidence attacks. Is there any sign at all that there is any recognition?

Given the stonewalling, would you support the creation of a cross-party delegation, including the Mayor, to take this issue forward to lobby the Government and to generally raise awareness of the issue in relation to London and Londoners?

You wrote a very comprehensive letter to the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and got a response from Mike Reid at the Fire and Resilience Policy Division. On two occasions in his letter he says these are `local operational matters'; the question of buying additional fire rescue units. So the Policy Division on Resilience calls this a `local operational matter'. Are we getting through to them at all?

In 2007/08, LFEPA will experience a £6.9M black hole in additional London Resilience funding as well as significant other London Resilience financial deficits in other years. When will the Government recognise the unique need to protect its capital city from major incidents and fund this shortfall?
