The Mayor, the Chairman of the MPA and the Home Secretary are all on record stating their aspiration for 35,000 police officers in London. The Mayor, in his press release of 14/02/02, (which actually called for an even higher figure of 41,000 officers) said: "I will need the agreement and backing of the government. Today I am calling on the Home Secretary to agree with me that we should work towards the target of matching New York's police numbers over the next 5 years." To your knowledge, has the Mayor or the MPA held any meetings with the Home Secretary...
