  • Responding to Flooding (Supplementary) [1]

    • Question by: Darren Johnson
    • Meeting date: 08 November 2006
On the Thames Gateway development issues, you said you have not specifically commented on the flood risk issue. Could I ask that LFEPA does look at the recommendations from the Assembly's Environment Committee that the plans be rigorously tested?
  • Responding to Flooding (Supplementary) [2]

    • Question by: Darren Johnson
    • Meeting date: 08 November 2006
Even if that is not going to be a statutory function, obviously there is a direct pressure that flood risk places on LFEPA's activities. Should you not be pressing for stronger planning policies to limit new development in high-risk flood areas, and actually really take a key part in this debate about Thames Gateway?
  • Initiatives for young and elderly (Supplementary) [13]

    • Question by: Darren Johnson
    • Meeting date: 12 November 2003
I would really like to welcome the emphasis on prevention and the work that you are doing in this area. You could not give Diana the exact details of the budget. Given that this is a growing area in terms of emphasis, is the overall percentage budget in terms of this prevention work growing?

    • Question by: Darren Johnson
    • Meeting date: 12 November 2003
But if you are actually providing equipment to vulnerable people - smoke alarms, etc. " there are budget implications to that. How are you going to overcome some of the political and institutional pressures in terms of this being vital work, but is not particularly glamorous or high-profile? There is always the danger that softer budget issues like this get trimmed.

  • Modernisation of Fire Service (Supplementary) [6]

    • Question by: Darren Johnson
    • Meeting date: 29 January 2003
There is a lot of talk about modernisation, but do you think it's very modern for the Deputy Prime Minister to be invoking emergency legislation from the 1940s to impose a pay deal on firefighters?
  • Modernisation of Fire Service (Supplementary) [7]

    • Question by: Darren Johnson
    • Meeting date: 29 January 2003
Do you really feel, though, that sort of hard line approach is really going to lead to an effective Fire Service and harmonious working relations with the workforce, or do you believe it's just a negotiating trick; it's just a trick to get them back round the negotiating table, and it's not a serious proposal at all?
  • Tackling Cardiac Deaths (Supplementary) [1]

    • Question by: Darren Johnson
    • Meeting date: 29 January 2003
But they've not been offered a decent pay settlement yet.
  • Tackling Cardiac Deaths (Supplementary) [4]

    • Question by: Darren Johnson
    • Meeting date: 29 January 2003
You talked about blockages from the union, but surely if the firefighters didn't block a decent pay settlement, there would be a real scope for taking on extra responsibilities and working more co-operatively with the other emergency services.
