    • Question by: Marina Ahmad
    • Meeting date: 07 September 2023
Marina Ahmad AM: Thank you, Chair. Good morning, panel. Enver, you spoke earlier about ESOL provision. As you know, ESOL provision was cut through Government austerity by almost 60% before the devolution of the AEB. What impact has this had and should the Government dedicate additional funding to the AEB to rectify the shortfall?

    • Question by: Zack Polanski
    • Meeting date: 07 September 2023
Zack Polanski AM: Thank you very much, Chair. Good afternoon, panel. Enver, if I can begin with you, I have met recently also with the Joint Council for Welfare of Immigrants. I also went to a protest recently with Reclaim the Sea and spoke to lots of people with lived experience of the system. Something that came up over and over again that you have echoed today is the barrier of not speaking English. In fact, recent census data shows that 303,000 Londoners do not speak English well and 52,000 Londoners do not speak English at all. Page 32 You...
  • Thanking Southwark Council and Lambeth Council

    • Reference: 2022/3651
    • Question by: Marina Ahmad
    • Meeting date: 13 October 2022
Will you join me in thanking Councillors and council staff across Lambeth and Southwark for their work throughout the recent period of national mourning and their role in ensuring the queue for the lying-in-state of Queen Elizabeth II, which was mainly in the two boroughs, was safe and secure? As you will know, due to pressures to maintain street cleanliness, many parks and street cleaners in Southwark and parts of Lambeth worked an extra 24 hours during Queen Elizabeth’s lying-in-state period.

Following your recent analysis that private renters are less likely to be registered to vote in London, what steps can you take to work with London Boroughs to drive up registration ahead of elections in London next May and a possible General Election at any moment?
  • Private Renting Voter Registration (2)

    • Reference: 2019/17576
    • Question by: Tom Copley
    • Meeting date: 12 September 2019
Your recent analysis about private renters and voter registration is timely and important. It also highlights how frequently private renters have to move in London. Not having a stable address can sometimes make it harder to get ID. Is there also a concern that the Government current Voter ID pilots and future proposals may make it harder still for London’s private renters to have their voices heard?
  • Performance (Supplementary) [1]

    • Question by: Tom Copley
    • Meeting date: 21 March 2019
Mr Mayor, I heard the word ‘failure’ and for some reason the first person I thought of was Boris Johnson [MP, former Mayor of London], your predecessor and of course their Mayor. You have highlighted very helpfully in your answer to Assembly Member Boff some of Boris Johnson’s massive achievements: £320,000 of taxpayers’ cash wasted on water cannon he could not legally use, £40 million on overpriced buses that overheated and were basically mobile saunas, and of course £43 million on the botched Garden Bridge. Do you think that perhaps their mistake is thinking that a mayor should be judged...
