The work that I am doing, together with the Office of Children's rights, to prepare the GLA's Children's strategy has made clear the importance of recognising the needs and views of children and young people. The Greater London Authority Act states that "in exercising their functions" the GLA must "have regard to the need to promote equality of opportunity for all persons irrespective of their.....age." However, the GLA's consultation processes do not routinely take children's views into account across all the Mayor's strategies. A GLA children's stakeholder group would solve this problem and provide this important fifth of London's population...

  • Air Quality Strategy

    • Reference: 2001/0070
    • Question by: Nicky Gavron
    • Meeting date: 28 February 2001
I am concerned that the Air Quality Strategy is exclusively focussed on transport pollution. Industrial pollution, particularly incinerator, needs inclusion for a comprehensive and accurate assessment of London's air quality. Such accuracy is the basis of informed recommendations and policy making. Given that: Current practices in place for measuring and regulator incinerator emissions are significantly lacking in rigour. Incinerators produce NOx, PM10s and a wide spectrum of other pollutants and heavy metals Proposals are afoot to double or triple waste incineration in London itself and extensively within its surrounding counties shouldn't the AQS be fully taking the effects of incinerators...
