  • Disabled Access to City Hall

    • Reference: 2007/2809
    • Question by: Valerie Shawcross
    • Meeting date: 12 December 2007
I have been very distressed to see the trouble which wheelchair users and the frail suffer to get a taxi either into or near City Hall. City Hall is reasonably accessible internally but getting in and out of the More London Bridge site is clearly a nightmare for disabled visitors. The signage is poor and security staff do not know what the rules are or what our policy is. Can you please ensure the Chief Executive gives priority to sorting this out with More London Bridge? Do you think a member of our facilities staff should be designated as a...
  • TOCU

    • Reference: 2007/2819
    • Question by: Valerie Shawcross
    • Meeting date: 12 December 2007
Is it true to say that TOCU Police officers patrol the A23 in vans and vehicles rather than riding on the bus as passengers? I have never seen a TOCU officer on a bus on the A23. Have I just been unlucky? Please can you say how many officer hours approximately were spent on buses in the last year on the A23 corridor and how many were spent patrolling in vehicles? What are the total staffing hours available from TOCU for patrolling the A23?
  • The Dip in Streatham

    • Reference: 2007/2820
    • Question by: Valerie Shawcross
    • Meeting date: 12 December 2007
Residents complain to me, and I know from my own experiences, that the section of the A23 below St Leonard's church, which is known locally as the 'dip', has become a `fear of crime' hotspot - one of several in Lambeth. What steps are the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership and the Police taking to tackle this fear of crime?
  • Trafficking in women

    • Reference: 2007/2821
    • Question by: Valerie Shawcross
    • Meeting date: 12 December 2007
What steps is the Metropolitan Police Service taking to tackle newspapers which publish advertisements from saunas, massage parlours and escort agencies and other 'soft' sex industries which are in fact illegal brothels? What is the Metropolitan Police doing to educate men who frequent these places to the fact that a high number of the women in brothels in London have been kidnapped, imprisoned, possibly tortured and forced into the sex industry against their will? Do you think men's collaboration with such serious crimes by using these brothels should be punishable in law as 'aiding and abetting' kidnap, violence and false...
  • Fireworks

    • Reference: 2007/2822
    • Question by: Valerie Shawcross
    • Meeting date: 12 December 2007
My assessment is that there was a welcome reduction this year in the amount of crime and anti social behaviour in London in which the abuse of fireworks was a key factor. I believe that the joint GLA, MPS, LFB and London Councils work on this issue, particularly the focus on trading standards enforcement against underage sales, was crucial to this. What data do we have about the incidences of misuse of fireworks this year? Will you keep up the pressure next year to ensure that we don't return to the mayhem that we suffered in some areas such as...
  • The achievements of Older People

    • Reference: 2007/2823
    • Question by: Valerie Shawcross
    • Meeting date: 12 December 2007
This year I hosted a ceremony which gave awards to recognise the voluntary work, creativity and achievements of the over 60s in Lambeth and Southwark. This was welcomed by the organisations which represent pensioners and by Age Concern. Will you consider holding a London-wide event of a similar nature?
  • Junction of St George's Rd and Lambeth Rd

    • Reference: 2007/2831
    • Question by: Valerie Shawcross
    • Meeting date: 12 December 2007
I am concerned that St George's Road is a one way wide Red Route road with heavy, fast traffic and yet the outdoor sports facilities for Notre Dame School are in Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park, so the girls are forced to cross the main road. At the moment they use the very cumbersome and inadequate pelican crossings at the junction of St George's Rd and Lambeth Rd. In this close vicinity there are 4 schools, one Cathedral, the Imperial War museum and the park. It seems to me that the area needs better urban design with safer crossing facilities, better...

  • Back-lot Garden Developments

    • Reference: 2007/2804
    • Question by: Valerie Shawcross
    • Meeting date: 12 December 2007
At the London Councils Leaders' meeting in November, you undertook to open discussions with London Councils about developing a policy presumption against building on domestic gardens in the London Plan, in order to strengthen the arm of local Councils in refusing such planning applications. Have you made any progress on this issue?
