  • TfL free travel

    • Reference: 2004/0154-1
    • Question by: Eric Ollerenshaw
    • Meeting date: 14 January 2004
At the last Mayor's Question Time, the Mayor confirmed for us that TfL give 110,000 free travel passes away each year. 93,000 of these go to non-TfL staff. If all these 93,000 passes were Zone 1-6 Travel cards, the taxpayer could be paying up to £140m a year for such privileges. This was justified on the grounds that such a concept goes back to the 1930's. What justification do you think there is for maintaining such 1930's a practice in the 21st Century, especially when the Mayor is saying there is a £1bn funding gap in the TfL budget from...

  • TfL Free travel (Supplementary) [1]

    • Question by: Eric Ollerenshaw
    • Meeting date: 14 January 2004
It does seem a very complicated perk. What astonished me when I asked the original question was when I was told that this perk apparently goes back to the 1930s, which makes it quite a modern kind of embellishment to being employed by the Underground. We issue over 109,000 free passes at a cost of £168 million, and 85% of those passes, that is 93,000 passes at a cost of £143 million, are to people who are not employed by TfL, some could be retired, some could be partners, what you will. It does seem to me, that in the...
