    Londoners welcome the initiative to improve police numbers in the capital and have noted the Mayor's promise of 1,050 additional officers in financial year 2001/2002. It is noted that the Home Secretary, through the Crime Reduction Fund, is providing up to £38 million to recruit and train 800 of these additional officers. Why does the Mayor wish to increase taxation on Londoners by £60 million to recruit 250 officers? .

Will he, therefore, provide an unambiguous statement that he will not support this new road scheme, but instead give priority to implementing traffic management, road safety, and public transport improvements along this stretch of road? .
