Unmesh Desai AM: Good afternoon, panel. My question is to John Dickie and it is about the future of our high streets. We have already had some references in the earlier discussion to small businesses and to high streets. Jordan Cummins talked about small businesses gasping for breath. Georgia Gould talked about high streets being at the heart of recovery plans. I could not agree more. Mr Dickie, with London boroughs focused on helping localised shopping areas, what is the future for our local high streets? How can they be put at the heart of our recovery plans?

Unmesh Desai AM: I have two sets of questions to put to you, Mr Mayor, but the Commissioner might wish to come in. My first question is what type of crime on the transport network. The latest crime statistics bulletin shows an “upward trend in violence/serious public order offences on the Tube, DLR and London Underground”. On 18 January [2019] through the media I was told that violent crime on the London Underground has risen by more than 43% in the past three years. Let us put those figures into context. Unmesh Desai AM: Mr Mayor, in March 2016 the British Transport Police (BTP) proposed axing its specialist sex crimes unit. Following concerns expressed by you and by others, the proposals have temporarily been halted. In fact, you were very robust in expressing your concerns. I believe that on 2 April 2016 in a speech at Brixton Town Hall you said and I quote: “I was appalled about the recent decision by the BTP to scrap the sexual violence unit.
