Let us look at the cost, then. It is expensive to start taking green space and then reconstitute it. Why not just leave it and find another option?

It has actually proven quite difficult for me to sit here and listen, and not stand up and shout, `rubbish,- because you are talking about environmental sustainability, you are talking about legacy in east London, and yet you are planning to tarmac over a piece of Hackney Marshes: East Marsh... You are ignoring the wishes of the local people, who have come up with several other options instead of tarmacking over a piece of green space. Why are you not consulting the local people? Therefore, I do not think that is necessarily a comfort for us to hear that from you now, and I think it is leaving it far too late, by the way, to address the overspend issue next summer when we may have already won the bid. Londoners, if...
  • Undertakings made to the British Olympic Committee (Supplementary) [1]

    • Question by: Angie Bray
    • Meeting date: 13 October 2004
I would just point out, since the Mayor raised it, that of course the Congestion Charge is not making anything like the money that TfL originally predicted. My third question is about the lottery game that is being set up specifically to fund the Olympics. One way, surely, that we might have been able to help Londoners a little more with their bills would have been if you had fought harder, Mr Mayor - and perhaps you still can; I am hoping that this could still be rectified - to dissuade, shall I say, Gordon Brown from lifting 12 pence...
