You have talked about the climate change disbenefits of expansion and current airport use. Have you also looked at the economic benefits of actually using that site for low-carbon industry rather than for airport use and the economic benefits from that?

The Mayor has previously told the Assembly that London City Airport should be returned to non-airport use after Crossrail is built. Is the LDA actually doing some detailed work now, looking at a post-airport scenario for the land?

  • Alternatives to Air Travel (Supplementary) [1]

    • Question by: Jenny Jones
    • Meeting date: 08 November 2006
Let me tell you about some others. Are you aware, for example, that there were 34 trips to Paris by flying? You could walk from New Scotland Yard to Waterloo and get on the train. There were also 21 trips to Brussels. It seems to me that there is this presumption that air travel is more exciting, more fun, and it seems to me that the Metropolitan Police Service is not taking the Mayor's instruction seriously. Thank you for that. I would just like to say offsetting is just a way of calming your conscience and not a really effective way of combating climate change. You talked about the short flights. Last year there were 120 flights to Manchester. Now, the journey to Manchester is actually just something over two hours and I can assure you you can work on the train, even in second class. Then there were 32 trips to Liverpool. These places are actually easily got to by train and I would just like to ask you if you will commit now to...
  • Complexity of Police Panels and Committees (Supplementary) [4]

    • Question by: Darren Johnson
    • Meeting date: 08 November 2006
Picking up on Valerie's (Shawcross) point, I certainly agree a borough- by-borough list would be extremely useful. In terms of the Ward panels it does seem to be extremely patchy, even within boroughs, from one Ward to the next. Whilst I agree a one size fits all approach of engagement is not going to be right across London, there do need to be some sort of minimum standards in terms of engagement and democratic structures and input from local councillors and so on, that does not seem to be happening. So will you be working with the boroughs to actually...
