I recently wrote to the independent body Civica Election Services (CES) with concerns about paid canvassing in the estate ballot on the Carpenters Estate, to which CES replied: “We cannot comment on matters relating to canvassing in general as this is outside the remit of the Independent body.” Given how unfair the impact of paid canvassing could be and the influence it can have on people’s responses, and the fact that this activity would be illegal in a democratic political election, should your guidance be reviewed?
