    In 1999, more people were diagnosed HIV+ than in any year since 1985. During the same period, the funding and resourcing of support centres was drastically cut by both Government, Health Authorities and local authorities, leading to the closure of many established centres across London. The government also failed to promote any nation-wide preventive campaign. The funding that was available was not confirmed or distributed until October of 1999, 6 months late, causing deep anxiety and financial pressure in voluntary organisations.     Londoners welcome the initiative to improve police numbers in the capital and have noted the Mayor's promise of 1,050 additional officers in financial year 2001/2002. It is noted that the Home Secretary, through the Crime Reduction Fund, is providing up to £38 million to recruit and train 800 of these additional officers.
