  • Cycle Network (Supplementary) [15]

    • Question by: Louise Bloom
    • Meeting date: 21 November 2001
Whichever way you look at the figures Jenny described, Ken, I am sure you will agree that the fact that only 2% of journeys in London are made by bike is a bit pathetic - especially compared with Copenhagen's 22% and Amsterdam's 28%. The fact that we are comparatively low down the list needs to be addressed. The Liberal Democrats in the past have told you about our idea of a "take bike" system, whereby commuters or tourists could use a smartcard to pick up a bike at a rail station or one of the interchanges - Earl's Court, King's...
  • Industry (Supplementary) [17]

    • Question by: Louise Bloom
    • Meeting date: 21 November 2001
All these packages and schemes are being pulled together by various people, but I was worried about their cohesion. Is somebody - other than you, presumably - in overall control of what is happening? Is there one central body or organisation? I know that the London Tourist Board are doing this to a certain extent, but when all these bits of money are going all over the place, how are we going to know what effect they have had, and when will we be able to see whether they have had any effect?
  • Wembley (Supplementary) [1]

    • Question by: Louise Bloom
    • Meeting date: 21 November 2001
So how will you be keeping an eye on how our money is spent? We know that major projects tend not to stick to budget or timetable, so if this project does go ahead - which seems highly unlikely, because of the all-round cock-up so far - how will you monitor what is happening?
  • Wembley (Supplementary) [5]

    • Question by: Louise Bloom
    • Meeting date: 21 November 2001
We would all like to see Wembley go ahead, but I am sure that, like me, you were horrified by the Select Committee report which has condemned the actions of various people, particularly Chris Smith. I am a little concerned: should we, as the GLA, really be bailing out the FA, who we know is one of the richest sporting organisations in the country? There is still the small matter of the £120 million floating around, and the promise that was made in Chris Smith's kitchen. We understand that they do not have to repay it. Possibly £20 million was...
  • Congestion Charge (Corporation of London) (Supplementary) [13]

    • Question by: Louise Bloom
    • Meeting date: 21 November 2001
I love it when the Tories get excited about buses - I do not think most of them have ever been on one. I get on buses every day, - and I would be prepared to wait 15 or 20 minutes for a night bus, incidentally; I think that is about right. We know that some people are not as keen on the congestion charge as others are, Ken, so, buses aside, my question is, how are you going to sell this to the people of London when it comes in? How are you going to provide information so that...
